Universal Background Screening:

Senator Feinstein to Introduce Universal Background Screening
Legislation for All Gun Purchases

Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today announced that she will introduce legislation early next year to require Universal background Screening for all gun sales, whether they take place at a licensed dealer, flea market, gun show or between private individuals.

Senator Feinstein made the announcement today at a Capitol Hill news conference with the Brady Center for the Reduction of Gun Violence. The Brady Center released a new report today detailing how easy it is for terrorists to purchase firearms in the United States.

"I intend to hold a hearing in the Judiciary Subcommittee on Terrorism, Technology and Government Information early next year on this report which explains the connection between terrorism and guns in America," Senator Feinstein said. "This report shows it is very easy for terrorists to purchase firearms in this nation."

"We already know that children can buy guns all too easily in order to kill other children. We know that gang members and criminals can do the same. Clearly, the time has come for a universal background screening on all gun sales, whether they take place at a licensed dealer, flea market, gun show or between individuals.

"I strongly believe Americans would support a Universal background screening as a requirement for buying a firearm. I also believe that members of the National Rifle Association would support a universal background screening.

"To this end, I will be submitting legislation early next year to accomplish this goal."
